Detailed description of the Good Practice

When the Bergen Co-operative Housing Association (BOB) planned to build 151 new dwellings in the city centre, they wanted to make them both comfortable and environmentally sound. The dwellings at Georgernes Verft were designed as 10 terraced blocks, each with 4-6 levels. 90 % of heating needs are covered by a heat pump using the harbour water as its heat source. For space heating, warm water circulates partly through radiators and partly under floors. Each flat has a panel om which energy consumption is monitored and can be controlled. The centrally set "default values" for temperature are 21 degrees during the day and 18 degrees at nighttime. Heat from air that is expelled through the ventilation system is recuperated by a heat exchanger, while heat loss through windows is reduced by low-emission caotings.

The Georgernes Verft complex also has several environmental features in addition to energy conservation. The indoor climate is good thanks to healthy building materials and a central vacuum cleaner system that removes dust from the air. All kitchens are equipped with several waste containers to make source separation simple. There is a common compost reactor which converts organic waste to compost within four weeks. Residents use the compost to grow plants on their balconies. Several meetings have been held at which the residents have learnt about and discussed the environmental features of Georgernes Verft, including the technical details.
