Learning to mow with scythes

Buskerud

Detailed description of the Good Practice

Each summer since 1994, the Buskerud County section of Naturvernforbundet (FOE Norway) have arranged courses in mowing by schythe at the "seter" (upland summer station in the old system of transhumance farming) of Ryghsetra. The courses run for four days in July, and the number of adult participants has varied between 20 and 36 - including farmers, teachers, students and museum staff. In 2001 there were so many applicants that many had to be disappointed. The lucky participants came from seven different countries.

In all, over 200 people have so far learnt how to care for wildflower meadows, which must be mowed regularly to maintain their biodiversity - and are becoming stedily rarer in Norway. The 3-hectare meadow at Ryghsætra itself, where the students practise, is an exceptional example of biodiversity, containing 150 species of vascular plants. Several participants have later started mowing courses in their own communities.

More Details of the Good Practice

FOE of Buskerud have recently published a handbook on conservation and restoration of wildflower meadows. As Buskerud County has established a friendship link with a county in Estonia, they are also sharing their knowledge to help Estonian friends restore wildflower meadows in that country.
