Annual prize for best back yard in Oslo


Detailed description of the Good Practice

"Oslos trivligste uterom" - the nicest back yard in Oslo - is an annual competition run since 1991 by the co-operative housing society OBOS and the association of city patriots "Oslo Byes Vel". All those living in multi-dwelling buildings in Oslo can enter. The object is to promote improvement of shared open spaces and neighbourly spirit in general. The back yard (or other open space) must be shared by at least several families and have been planned and improved mainly through their own direct efforts.

More Details of the Good Practice

The jury will be impressed both by aestheically pleasing, (multi-)functional and otherwise well-thought-out solutions. At present (2003) the jury consists of architect Daniel Bruun, chairman of Oslo Byes Vel, landscape architect Gro Jørgensen, Ann-Mari Langsrud, editor of the OBOS magazine, and Åge Pettersen, OBOS' Information Manager. The winners are awarded a party with champagne and canapés along with a print by a well-known Norwegian artist, while two runners-up get a diploma.

Winners have been: Sørumsgata 1-3, Kampen (1991), Sofienberggata 33, Grünerløkka (1992), Normannsgata housing co-operative, Kampen (1993), Biermannsgate 12, Torshov (1994), Haxthausensgate 4, Frogner (1995) Suhmsgate 14, Majorstuen (1996), Østgaardsgate 2, Torshov (1997), Qaurter XVI, Torshov (1998), Quarter IV, Lindern (2000), Kirkegårdsgata 5, Sofienberg (2001), Sarpsborggata 16 (2002).
