Underground station from battleground to showcase

Oslo

Detailed description of the Good Practice

At the end of 1998, the Oslo public transport company Oslo Sporveier were thinking of closing the Ellingsrudåsen underground station due to incessant vandalism, fighting and drug trafficking. A poll showed that 75 % of passengers felt unsafe there. But instead of closing it, Oslo Sporveier opted for co-operation with the local comminity to change things. They spent NOK 300.000 (€ 40.000) to give the station a facelift and placed the above-ground station buildings at the disposal of the community. The City District of Furuset of which Ellingsrudåsen forms part was asked for advice, and the upshot was that the local Volunteer Centre and a café moved into the station.
