Detailed description of the Good Practice

At the end of September 2008, acceptance tests were carried out for the prototype of a “solar ferry” of the Bydgoszcz Urban Transport Company Ltd. (Miejskie Zakłady Komunikacyjne sp. z o.o.). The unit, to be called “Słonecznik” (“a sunflower”), is the first passenger inland waterway vessel in Poland with solar panels and batteries as the basic propulsion power source.
The first course of Bydgoszcz Water Tram was on 9 October 2004. The Water Tram was a joint initiative of Bydgoszcz City Hall, the University of Economy in Bydgoszcz (Wyższa Szkoła Gospodarki w Bydgoszczy) and Bydgoszcz Sailing (Żegluga Bydgoska). After the first year of activity the route was extended. The water tram plays two roles: it is a means of transport and a tourist attraction. Ticket prices are the same as for buses and tramways. It operates every year between 1st May and 31st October.

As a result of the rising popularity of the water tram a second vessel was purchased. This way it also contributes to environmental protection.

Four solar panel sections have been integrated at the top. The cell generated energy is stored in two battery units of capacity sufficient for some 10 hours of voyage with economical speed. Two driving motors ensure a maximum speed of 12 km/h and considerable maneuverability. The vessel, carrying up to 30 passengers, will be operated as a water tram within the Bydgoszcz Waterways System.

The vessel has been designed by the company Yacht Concept Gawłowski, which has already delivered solar powered boats to clients in Germany.
