Free-of-charge city bikes
Detailed description of the Good Practice
Copenhagen started in 1995 with 1000 free-of-charge bikes in the city. The City bikes are public to everybody and can be borrowd from the City Bikes rack for a small deposit. The system is similar to luggage carriers on airports. After use the bikes can be locked at any city bike rack in the city and the deposit is returned.
The City Bikes became a permanent part of Copemhagen and they are of great public interest both in Denmark and internationally.
Objectives of the Good Practice
The objective of the project was to give the possibility to use bicycles in the whole city, for example, if people arrive in CPH centre by bus, they can continue with the bike. City Bikes are meant to be an extension of public transport.
Participants of the Good Practice
The project was started in 1994 in cooperation with the foundation of City Bikes in CPH, the advertising agency ARAS Outdoor, Cycle Imports of Scandinavia and the City of Copenhagen. Also the Ministry of Culture and the "Wonderful Copenhagen" tourist organisation were involved.
Target group of the Good Practice
