Running Events in National Park
Detailed description of the Good Practice
The National Park “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” is an important image factor. It directly attracts tourist and visitors to the region. Therefore, the combination of experiencing a unique natural environment and the teaching of the aims of environmental protection needs to be strengthened by sustainable tourist offers and products which are typical for the region.
Objectives of the Good Practice
- To attract visitors to the National Park
- To combine sport and environmental education
- To enable people to make a living from the National Park
Results: The first Darß-Marathon was organized in May 2006. Over 1300 participants finished the Marathon or the Half-Marathon and 110 kids took part in the kids run. Since then the Marathon has been organized annually.
The events are organized in sustainable ways starting from chinaware plates at a Pasta Party to paperboard cups to serve water along the track.

More Details of the Good Practice
According to Christoph Lampert the event was sustainable tourism at its best, because many of the runners visited Fischland/ Darß/ Zingst for the first time and enjoyed the wonderful scenery. Runners were taking part in guided tours through the National park “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” and got to know all about environmental education in protected areas. Many of the participants took the opportunity and combined the running event with some extra holidays, so the event generated additional value for the whole area.
