Don't Drink & Drive in Kalmar
Detailed description of the Good Practice
The campaign "Don’t Drink and Drive in Kalmar" began as part of a five year collaborative project between Kalmar Municipality and the Swedish Road Administration. The goal was to develop and test methods to improve traffic safety and to decrease traffic related environmental effects.
Within the framework of the collaborative project with the Swedish Road Administration the Municipality of Kalmar used a method whereby a driver stopped by the police for drunk driving or driving under the influence of other drugs is promptly offered contact with social services or a drug prevention centre, and given help as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours. Today The Kalmar Arena "Don’t Drink & Drive in Kalmar" is a permanent arena engaged in implementing, developing and following up these efforts.

Outcome: It was decided that at least 10 % of the drivers stopped by the police for being under the influence of alcohol/drugs should undergo treatment. A plan of action for each year has been produced. Meetings have been held on a regular basis at varying intervals; on an average 8 times per year. The effective goals have been evaluated within each organisation. Evaluation reveals that great progress has been made. The figures for Kalmar are the best in the country.
