Detailed description of the Good Practice

The municipal cultural foundation “The Central municipal library Aalto” (the full legal name of the library) is located in the building that was built by the world famous finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The building is a unique monument of the librarian architecture. The library is also known as a centre of information, culture, arts and communication and as one of the main tourist attractions of Vyborg.

Process of restoration, that started ab. 15 years ago, revealed the whole beauty of the architectural design. The process of restoration has not stopped the library’s activities, other way round, it has influenced the general trends of development and modernization of the librarian business in Vyborg. Currently, the library is offering more and more services for the citizens and visitors , including cultural and educational activities.

Ecological education is one of the important activity of the library nowadays. When analyzing the current sanitary and ecological situation in the region, it becomes evident, that the initial step to be taken by local authorities is to work with citizens on matters of education, training and promoting ecological standards. Based on the experience of other countries, the best results you can achieve in ecological education of population is when you start to involve all groups of citizens : from youngsters to elderly people.

The library has taken the initiative in this issue. It has different thematic blocks of information on ecological issues : biological, social, applied, juridical and local .
A special programme , entitled “ Wake up and clean your planet “ was worked out by the librarians in cooperation with the specialists on environmental issues. Different forms of involvement of the population are envisaged in the programme:
• Exhibitions
• Ecological readings
• Competitions
• Thematic classes
• Festivals and festivities.

Starting from 2004 , the conference “Days of Ecology” has been organized and since that time has become very popular among school students. The main topic is the ecological situation of the region. Participants can try themselves in research work, paintings, writing essays or designing different items from the waste materials.

Last year (2008) the first award was given for the research work “ Air control by pine monitoring”.
