A safer and more attractive night life in Oskarshamn

Detailed description of the Good Practice

There are often brawls and disturbances along the streets Hamngatan and Kungsgatan in Oskarshamn. Most of the disturbances are caused by groups of young people on Friday – and Saturday nights. Both young people and grown ups have been complaining about the unsafe environment in the streets.

Young people have been given the opportunity to express their views and to come up with advice on how street safety can be increased. The method used was a questionnaire which was distributed to 950 pupils in their schools. The target group was teenagers 14, 16 and 18 years old. The result from the poll gave several suggestions of how to make these streets safer for everybody.

The result has been presented to other stakeholder groups, to the authorities and to politicians. One practical solution was to improve the lighting along the street. One important result is that is that the municipality has closed an agreement with the police about joint actions and shared responsibilities in crime-and violence prevention within, but also outside, the Hamngatan/Kungsgatan area.
