Fifty/fifty - Energy Management in Schools
Berlin
Detailed description of the Good Practice
The "fifty/fifty" action is to motivate schools to save energy. The idea of the action is that energy saving profits not only environment but the participating schools as well. The participating schools get 50% of the saved energy costs.
Energy saving is to be reached with conscious consumer behavior. So, pupils, teachers and caretakers are requested to save in heat and electricity by feasible energy saving measures. Those are simple energy-conscious actions when using thermostats, lamps, other electrical gadgets and air conditioner.

More Details of the Good Practice
Originally the instrument was developed in 1993 by the Hamburg Environment Authority and was implemented in Berlin 1996 by the Senate Department of Urban Development, Climate Protection Unit and UfU e.V. Fifty/fifty relies heavily on cooperation between all related partners.
The designated schools have to be evaluated under energy related aspects. Students and teachers establish energy management teams. These teams will lead the energy saving measures at the school. Fifty/fifty connects energy saving measures and environmental education, as students are direct involved in energy saving measures. The knowledge achieved at school can be used at home as well.
An evaluation of the project in 2000/2001 showed that the annual energy savings amounted to 942 000
kWhel + 5 900 000 kWhth. The financial savings amounted to 600 000 €/a. In 2001 290 000 € were
paid to the schools.
In 2006/2007 Klimabündnis and UFU started a new project called fifty/fifty PLUS. The principles are the same as before but the action was extended also to municipalities and other schools. More support was also offered: e.g. written material, meetings, telephone guidance.
