Use of recycled paper
Gdynia
Detailed description of the Good Practice
The Environment Protection and Agriculture Department decided to be one of the first in Poland to introduce 100% recycled paper. The paper has been used as a basic office material since 5th June 2001. Using the recycled paper in office is part of the realisation of “Gdynia –environmentally friendly city” defined in “Strategic Plan for Gdynia”. The above mentioned action has an educational character and it aims at promoting the environmentally friendly attitude as well as demonstrating of real possibilities of using waste paper collected within the modern waste management programme run in Gdynia. The replacement of the wood cellulose mass with recycling mass contributes to water saving as well as thermal and electric energy saving. Furthermore, collecting waste paper within the modern waste management programme substantially decreases the area of municipal dumping grounds as well as costs of their construction and utilization. Last year within the waste management programme 80 tons of waste paper were collected in two districts of Gdynia, which means that waste paper being 1 metre thick and of the area equivalent to one tennis court was not dumped in a landfill.
