"Looking for eye contact in the traffic"

Detailed description of the Good Practice

A traffic safety campaign "I am looking for Eye-contact in the traffic" promotes a positive attitude and habits in traffic behaviour in Växjö. Also this project has been a success and will go on for at least three more years (until 2008). Since 2001, Växjö Municipality and the Swedish Road Administration (SRA) have been working together with a traffic safety campaign called "I am looking for Eye-contact in the traffic". The traffic campaign runs throughout the media such as the local press, radio and TV. Brochures and reflector tags are available in the Municipality reception, at the library and local schools.
At the same time, as more and more people start to use bicycle the need for traffic information increases. One way to work with decreasing the emissions from the
transport systems and at the same time increasing the traffic safety thinking is
to encourage schools to work with traffic issues.
Since 2002, the Mobility Office project and the Traffic Department have co-operated
in a long-term project called Traffic in school. The traffic safety campaign forms
an important part in this work. A website www.vaxjo.se/rastplatsen for children,
parents and teachers was introduced in 2003.

During the past couple of years, Växjö Municipality has successfully concentrated
the work on the combination of “hard” and “soft” traffic safety measures. To date (2005), the Traffic Department has received three awards for the efforts undertaken in the city, e.g. with speed limits of 30 km/hour.
Växjö Municipality is one of the few municipalities in Sweden who is fortunate
to be able to work with traffic safety information. In the end of 2004, it was decided that the two projects "I am looking for Eye-contact in the traffic" and the follow- up project to the Mobility Office, will continue at least for three more years.
